Cliff Johnson is probably best known around baseball for this incident with Goose Gossage at Yankee Stadium in 1979, but he should be best known for his mustache.
Thick and dark, it provided the perfect compliment to his Afro, which also features prominently above on his 1984 Topps card. You can see it poking out from underneath his “I don’t need no stinkin’ ear flaps” batting helmet in the action shot, and providing a stylin’ perch for his Blue Jays cap in the head shot.
Johnson provided a heavy bat (and not much glove) for a number of teams during his career, and is remembered fondly in Toronto as one of the franchise’s earliest pure sluggers. Reacquired by the Blue Jays from Texas late in the 1985 season, Cliff and his mustache hit .368 in the ALCS that year as the Jays fell to the Royals in seven games.
